HTTP/S and Port Forwarding

1. What are HTTP/S and Port Forwarding?

Gateway v3.42.0 introduces HTTP/S and Port Forwarding, enabling organizations to securely provide authorized remote users with access to internal network resources—without the need for a VPN.

  • HTTP/S: Publishes an internal web application (HTTP/HTTPS service) so users can access it directly from a browser — for example, an internal ERP system or admin portal.
  • Port Forwarding: Forwards a non-web internal service port so users can connect with their usual native client tools — for example, SSH, RDP, VNC, or a database management port.

2. How to Configure a Profile

Before using HTTP/S or Port Forwarding, you need to create a corresponding Profile on the Splashtop Connector. Each Profile represents one service you want to publish (e.g., one internal website or one database port). To publish multiple services, create a separate Profile for each.

For detailed steps on creating and configuring HTTP/S and Port Forwarding Profiles on the Connector (including field descriptions, Target Server format, and port rules), please see:

Once a Profile is configured and enabled, it will appear as a computer entry in your Splashtop On-Prem app computer list. You can then connect to it as described in Section 3.

3. Connecting from the Splashtop On-Prem app

Version requirement

  • Windows app v3.8.4.7 or later
  • Mac app v3.8.4.7 or later

Once a Profile is set up, it appears as its own computer entry in the computer list of Splashtop On-Prem app

To connect: Double-click the entry, or click the Connect button on the specific computer.

  • HTTP/S: Connecting will automatically open the target address in your default browser..
  • Port Forwarding: Connecting establishes a forwarding tunnel. Use your local native client tool (e.g., an SSH or RDP client) to connect to the address and port shown.

To disconnect: Double-click the entry, click the Disconnect button, or simply close the Splashtop On-Prem app.

Note: These computer types don't support "Group Connect" — you'll need to connect to each one individually.

4. Managing from your Gateway

You can also manage both features from the Gateway:

  • Enable/Disable: Go to Settings > Team Settings > Unattended access, where you can independently toggle "Enable HTTP/S Computer" and "Enable Port Forwarding Computer" (both enabled by default).
  • All Computer List: HTTP/S and Port Forwarding computers appear in the computer list, where you can assign them to groups, add notes, view authorized users, or remove them.
  • Session Logs: View historical access records on the HTTP/S Sessions and Port Forwarding Sessions pages.
